What do osteopaths treat?

 

Here is a quick run down of some of the more common reasons people seek osteopathic treatment.

Low back pain

Pain in the lower back can be the result of a variety of reasons. Anything from poor posture to prolonged driving to heavy lifting. Sciatica and nerve pain from a disc injury or degenerative changes can also accompany lower back pain

Upper back pain

Upper back pain

Pain in the upper and mid back can be the result of too much sitting, gardening, heavy lifting, excessive twisting, or even coughing and sneezing. In women an incorrectly fitted bra can result in back pain.

Arthrtitis pain

Although there is no cure for arthritis, Osteopathy can help to ease the pain, stiffness and swelling associated with it. Types of arthritis Osteopaths commonly see include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis.

Joint pain in the knees, shoulders, ankles etc. can be the result of a sporting injury., especially, if there is inadequate warm-up/cool-down period or poor technique. Joint pain can also be the result of a RSI (repetitive strain injury) or general wear and tear.

Headaches are often caused by tension, stress and poor posture. However eye strain, jaw problems and previous whiplash injuries and arthritic changes are all also causes of headaches, migraines and neck pain.

Pregnancy

Changes to your posture and softening of the ligaments can cause pain both during and after pregnancy. A common pregnancy issue treated by Osteopaths is SPD (symphsis pubis dysfunction) or PGP (pelvic girdle pain). Osteopathy can also help encourage your baby into the optimal position for birth.

Osteopathy can help with issues caused by difficult or traumatic birth by gently returning the cranial bones to a position of ease and comfort. Cranial can also help with feeding and digestive issues such as jaw discomfort resulting in a poor latch, this in turn can cause the infant to take in too much air and cause symptoms of colic/reflux.

Common childhood issues treated by Osteopaths are growing pains, childhood accidents such as sprains or falls. Osteopathy may also help resolve behavioural issues such as difficulty concentrating at home or school or poor sleeping patterns.
